Questions
Is KVP tax-free?
No. There is no deduction on investment and the interest is taxable at your slab. It suits someone who wants a government-backed doubling with no market risk, not someone optimising tax.
Why does the tenure keep changing?
Because the scheme guarantees doubling, not a term. When the quarterly rate changes, the number of months required changes with it.
Important
Kisan Vikas Patra is defined by doubling rather than by a fixed term — at 7.5% it takes 116 months, and the official tenure moves whenever the rate is revised. There is no upper limit and no 80C benefit. Interest is taxable at your slab each year on an accrual basis, though no TDS is deducted. The certificate can be encashed after two and a half years.
